For those of us who are looking to maximize our space, ferns are an excellent addition. The purpose of adding ferns to your garden is to enclose your area to provide you with a sense of privacy and intimacy while also producing shade and quintessential charm. There are too many types of types to choose from, a few of which will be highlighted in this article because of their individual qualities and beauty.
The Christmas Fern, scientifically known as Polystichum acrostichoides, is an evergreen type variety. This type of plant is one of the most common of its kind, spanning across North America. This plant has a strong mid-tone green color, with fronds that will reach the size of approximately 3 feet long and 4 inches wide. Benefits of this plant are that it is fertile, which causes the plant to remain green throughout the year. The best type of environment for this lovely plant to thrive is in the moderately moist soil in well shaded and forest areas.
The New York Fern, scientifically named Thelypteris noveboracensis, is an also a common type found in the United States. The fronds of this plant delicate, long, and fluttery, adding to the plant's modest height of 1-2 feet. Not an entirely green plant, it has a slightly brown base, and can also be either smooth or hairy. The plant would make a great addition to a garden which isn't looking for an entirely green plant, but one that will blend in well with other hues.
The Cinnamon Fern, also called Osmunda cinnamomea, is a bit more uncommon but also unique. It is named after the sprinkle like brown coloration at the tops of the fronds, and this plant is perfect for a garden that is looking for a bit of a different type of addition. Rather than share the common short height of its counterparts, this plant can reach up to 6 feet tall and 12 feet wide. It's ideal for creating cool shade in a garden and adding some originality.
Ostrich Fern or Matteuccia struthiopteris is also a unique fern. This plant serves as a great and delicate ornament to the garden. The size of the leaves can reach up to 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. This plant also has a favorite green color which enhances its delicate fronds. One of the most significant benefits of adding this variety to your garden is that it is drought resistant and it is effortless to grow.
Overall, decorating your garden with these lovely plants is bound to make a difference. The only tricky part is choosing the right variety that suits you and your personal space.
