Product Description

Carolina Allspice

Not all gardeners think of having a Carolina Allspice, Calycanthus floridus, in their garden, but as soon as they catch a smell of it, they easily transport to a time that brings back the most beautiful memories. Regardless of that, if you have not included the Carolina Allspice bush in your garden, you will love adding a few due to the perfect addition that they make.

You will also love that the Carolina Allspice blooms a sweet flower each spring that can only be described as tropical. This is because of the fragrance consisting of a mix of banana, pineapple, and strawberry. This fragrance is what makes gardeners go crazy for it.

Its green leaves are shaped like an oval and facing each other. The stems and leaves also carry an aromatic fragrance if they are compressed. During the fall, the Sweetshrub leaves may become yellowed and bear fruit after flowering is done.

Carolina Allspice Shrubs For Sale

The best method to start with is a Sweetshrub that has already bloomed. This way, you will be able to know the sweet smell that we are talking about. When they are fragrant before you purchase them, they will continue to provide the same great fragrance as long as you have them in your garden.

For planting the Carolina Allspice, it is best to use soil that is moist and loamy but at the same time well-drained. It should be in the sun or a partially shady spot. In the sun, the growth becomes thick; however, its shade growth becomes open and loose. Also, it is good to know that although the ideal soil condition is moist, the Sweetshrub can survive dry conditions as soon as they have been growing for a while.

Once flowering is completed, you can then decide to prune them if you prefer to maintain their size. If you do, it is best to prune a few of the older limbs so that new growth can sprout. Ensure pruning occurs at ground level because if tip pruning occurs, you may cause the stem to develop a sprout, causing the tops to become too heavy.

Fortunately, gardeners will not have to worry about any pests or diseases that could affect the Sweetshrub. Nevertheless, suckering does occur and can become problematic if a garden or landscape is well-kept and not projecting the plant's natural habitat. To avoid suckering, it is best to have the Sweetshrub planted naturally in your garden or along an area with many other bushes.

The Carolina Allspice is also known to grow in a wild environment mixed easily within woodlands, forests, and on the shores of streams and rivers.

With easy adaptability and growth, the Sweetshrub prefers conditions that closely resemble its native environment.

Sweetshrub Varieties

Many varieties of Carolina Allspice can be obtained for your garden, and all have similar fragrances. Having a dependable native will provide flowers that are maroon or tremendously dark. An Athens variety gives off flowers that are a mix of green and yellow. The "Edith Wilder" has a more giant flower than what you will generally see with the species with rounded leaves. The most well-known is called the "Michael Lindsey" and represents the species pretty well. Its habitat is denser, has a beautiful yellowing in the fall, and blooms for a more extended time. There is also a hybrid variety known as "Hartlage Wine" and combines both C. Chinensis and Calycanthus floridus.

The Carolina Allspice is shipped bare root.
